The hardest part of learning a new language is expressing your own thoughts in it. If you are in a foreign country, you really have no choice. And, of course, that is the best way to learn. But, what if you are learning on your own and you don’t (yet!) have the time or money to go live in the country where the language is spoken? In that case you must look for the occasion to use your new language, and to keep learning. I started keeping a daily diary in Italian to do just that. Some of what I write there will be posted here.

I also run The Northern New Jersey Italian and English Language Exchange for people who want to speak Italian and aren’t quite yet so good at it.

La cosa più difficile di imparare una nuova lingua è di esprimere i tuoi propri pensieri. Se resti nel paese straniero, non hai scelta. Ed è davvero il modo migliore di imparare. Ma, se impari da solo e non ha (ancora!) il tempo o i soldi di andare nel paese dove si parla la lingua? In quel caso devi cercare l’occasione di usare la nuova lingua e di continuare ad imparare. Ho cominciato di tenere un diario in Italiano per fare proprio questo. Un po’ delle storie che scrivo pubblicherò qui.
